As Rex Heuermann is sentenced to life in prison for the murders of eight women whose remains were found near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, Decriminalize Sex Work staff members’ thoughts remain with the victims, their families, and the communities forever changed by this tragedy.
Several of the victims reportedly engaged in sex work. While one man is being held accountable for these horrific crimes, the case also exposes the broader systems that left these women vulnerable and made it more difficult to identify a serial killer.
For years, advocates and sex workers warned that criminalization and stigma create barriers to safety. When people fear arrest or mistreatment by law enforcement, they are less likely to report violence, suspicious behavior, or information that could help stop dangerous offenders. Criminalization also pushes sex work further underground, making it harder for workers to screen clients, share safety information, and access support.
DSW Legal Director Melissa Broudo advocated for sex workers in New York during the early years of the Gilgo Beach investigation. She has long argued that protecting people from arrest when they report crimes is essential to public safety.
"Sex workers who experience violence or witness crimes should be able to seek help without fearing arrest themselves," Broudo said. "No one should have to choose between their own safety and cooperating with law enforcement."
This is why DSW continues to advocate for safe reporting laws that protect sex workers from prostitution-related charges when they report crimes as victims or witnesses. These laws help ensure that people can come forward with critical information without risking their own arrest.
But immunity protections are only part of the solution. Decriminalization is the policy change that allows sex workers to exercise the same basic rights as anyone else, including reporting violence, seeking help, working together to stay safe, and having access to services without fear of criminal penalties.
The Gilgo Beach murders are a devastating reminder that public safety is improved by ensuring everyone can seek protection, report harm, and is treated with dignity regardless of how they earn a living.
